The Ombudsperson for Children’s Office of Mauritius is the first of its kind in Africa. The first such specialised office was set up in Norway in 1981. In fact, Mauritius has been inspired by the Norwegian model. Act No. 41 of 2003, the Ombudsperson for Children Act (OCA 2003) was voted on 21 October 2003. The assent of the President of the Republic was given on 10 November 2003. The Act came into force on 20 November 2003 on the occasion of the Universal Children's Day.
Pursuant to the Ombudsperson for Children’s Act (OCA) 2003, the Ombudsperson for Children's Office (OCO) was established in the same year.
